I've been a fan of his music since 1963 (Small Faces, Faces, the early Rod Stewart albums, when he was actually good, the Bump Band) but I can honestly say I'm thrilled to be showing his art because it's interesting, it's new & it's good. Ian has migraines and says he just paints what he sees.

Some of the work is online now and we'll have more in the gallery for the opening.

"Colorful Women" is the first public showing of art by Austin author and musician Jesse Sublett.

Most of the work in this show came from his pocket journals which he’s used to record writing notes for his noir fiction, songwriting and other projects, as well as sketching random daydreams during espresso breaks. A few years ago, he began adding color to his sketches. The small scale, intricately detailed works in this show (mostly 4...... in. x 6 in., or slightly smaller) were culled from over a dozen little black books that Jesse has filled up in the last few years. The text in the background of many of the drawings is there because the page originally was being used to record writing notes, song lyrics or a poem. The show also includes some larger scale works incorporating acrylic and India ink.

“Colorful Women” reflects Jesse’s musical influences, which range from Howlin’ Wolf and Son House to Nina Simone and Bryan Ferry, as well as his obsession with film noir and hardboiled crime fiction. He’s also a long-time fan of cubism, impressionism and surrealism, as well as Jack Kirby’s work for Marvel Comics.

Jesse has been a vital presence in the Austin music scene since the late 1970s, when he formed Austin’s first punk band, the Skunks. He continues to play gigs, drawing from a large repertoire of original and traditional murder ballads and blues. His first crime novel, Rock Critic Murders (set in Austin), was published in 1989 and followed by two others, plus a memoir (Never the Same Again: A Rock N’ Roll Gothic), and various other works.

Mike Miller and Dave "Big Dutch" Nally are both natives of Reading, PA. Mike is an antique dealer who collects vintage photos, cuts them up and uses them to create his silhouette collages. Recently he designed a line of prints and home furnishings, featuring his cutout art, for the home decor chain West Elm. Big Dutch is a self-taught artist who has made a living as a steelworker the last 20 years. After work he relaxes by doing his stream of consciousness art. His media are colored pencil, acrylics and water colors on thick paper, as well as constructions and jewelry from found metal objects.

Toronto artist Clint Griffin comes at maps in an altogether different way from Shannon Rankin: he takes salvaged wood and scratches away at its layers of paint and dirt and rot to reveal maps. His materials, fragments of people's houses & lives that have been used, abused, tossed away and consigned to the trash heap, are resurrected as art.

Shannon Rankin lives and works in Rangeley, Maine, where she creates installation art and smaller, elegant collages inspired by her interests in anatomy and geography. Last fall she contributed several pieces to our embroidery show, "Over & Under." She does some really cool and wonderful things with maps: "While bearing traces of the original form, I deconstruct maps to create new geographies, suggesting the potential for a broader landscape."

I got a call early this morning from Larry Clemens, a long-time friend & supporter of Purvis', with the news that Purvis had passed away. Having only met Purvis a handful of times I can't really claim to have been anything more than an enthusiastic admirer and supporter. His work was beautiful, passionate & wise, pretty much embodying everything I love about self-taught art. It was about Overtown, where he lived, and he and his work stayed true to that. He didn't have an easy life; on the contrary, he suffered more than his fair share of hardships. But he leaves behind an impressive legacy that one hopes will far outlast him.

Dublin-born painter and musician Karl Mullen will show his most recent work and perform at Yard Dog Gallery during the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, March, 2010.

Karl has developed his own non-traditional approach to art making and materials, frequently utilizing walnut oil, raw powder pigment and a wax medium that coalesce into color-saturated, luminous images. Painting largely with his hands, Karl creates distinctive, poetic figures that float on fields of color. The imagery in his paintings is born out of Irish mythology, family and dreams.

Mullen’s paintings reside in many private collections in the United States and Europe and in the permanent holdings of Robert Morris College, The Polk Museum and The Hurn Museum. They were also showcased in the PBS syndicated TV series Rare Visions & Roadside Revelations and are included frequently in art/design magazines such as Home Accents and Elle Décor. He shows annually at New York Outsider Art Fair, The Intuit Show, Chicago, Folk Fest, Atlanta, and at galleries throughout the country and in Europe.

His newest new works, expressive figures painted with walnut ink on butcher paper, have a warm, rough-hewn feel. They are at once organic and refined.

Mullen has been prolific in the past year, recording a CD of new acoustic songs that he will perform at Yard Dog Gallery’s famous Saturday afternoon event during SXSW at 1 pm on Saturday, March 20.

Each song has a corresponding painting.

The album is called 'do re Me ' and was recorded with longtime friend, acclaimed Appalachian singer Jennifer Goree largely in a cabin in the woods of South Carolina. “Jennifer’s family has this cabin by a river in Six Mile, SC and invited me to come stay and write some tunes. We like singing together and have been great friends since we met in a record shop in Pittsburgh years ago. Jennifer's husband, [Irish producer Kevin Maloney (U2, Sinead O Connor )] convinced us to record a few tracks. The process was just great fun. We had no plan for world domination or a number 1 hit. It was just 2 friends singing together in the mountains,” Mullen said.

The friends recorded for two weekends in a nearby studio in a trailer with barking dogs and tornado warnings, and no lack of torrential rain on the roof. There was no fuss or fanfare and the budget was $300. A few talented friends sat in on some tunes and learned them on the spot.

Having been invited to show his paintings at Yard Dog gallery during the SXSW music festival, Karl and Jennifer decided to introduce the songs there. Lucky music/art lovers in attendance will receive 'do re Me' CDs with their painting purchases.

'do re Me " made its airtime debut on RTE Irish radio last week, and the CD is being released on the newly formed "littlesticks' record label.

“I always wanted to sign to a record label so I signed myself...and got a great deal!” the artist quipped.

In the 1970s Mullen founded and led the legendary Punk band Carsickness. The Ploughman’s Lunch and Karl Mullen Band followed, and his song “Whiskey from the Field” -- recorded by Scottish folk legends The Battlefield Band and acclaimed Irish folk artist Pat Kilbride --received a Grammy nomination.

Tony Fitzpatrick is an artist, poet, and actor whose artwork can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
His recent exhibitions include solo shows in New York City's P.S.1 - MoMA and Pierogi Gallery in 2007 and in the Sidney Yates Gallery of the Chicago Cultural Center in 2008. In the same year his work was also shown at the First Biennial in New Orleans at Prospect One. In 2009 he has had one-person exhibitions in New York City at Dieu Donne, in New Orleans at Ammo Gallery, in Illinois at the Rockford College Museum, in Austin at Slugfest Gallery, and in Los Angeles at Billy Shire Gallery. In January of 2010 he will be exhibiting new work at Pierogi Gallery in New York City.
His work has also appeared on album covers including The Neville Brothers' Yellow Moon and Steve Earle's El Corazon and The Revolution Starts Now.
Tony has made a living as a radio personality, construction worker, and as a film, stage and television actor. He has appeared in 15 major motion pictures including The Fugitive, Married to the Mob, Mad Dog and Glory, and Philadephia. Recently he appeared in The Promotion directed by Steven Conrad. In 1991, Tony earned the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor in Prop Theater's production of Mass Murder. In the summer of 2003, Tony starred in Lookingglass Theatre's inaugural production of Race, an adaptation of a Studs Terkel novel directed by David Schwimmer.
Tony has published seven books including three collections of art and poetry: The Hard Angels (1988), Dirty Boulevard (1998) and Bum Town (2001); a collection of etchings entitled Tony Fitzpatrick: Max and Gaby's Alphabet (2001) and three collections of drawing-collages entitled, The Wonder: Portraits of a Remembered City, Volume 1 (2005), The Wonder: Portraits of a Remembered City, Volume 2, The Dream City (2006), and The Wonder: Portraits of a Remembered City, City of Monsters, City of Ghosts (2008).
Tony Fitzpatrick was born in Chicago in 1958 where he lives today with his wife and two children.

I'm really excited to be showing the work of Chicago artist Tony Fitzpatrick, 'cause I've been a big fan of his drawing collages for years. His Steve Earle album covers were my introduction to his work, then I searched out his books online, bought a print, Jon Langford took me by his Chicago studio once on the way to a Wee Hairy Beasties gig and introduced us. March 13 is the opening, but the work will be online a few days before that.

Tony is a Chicago artist who primarily works in mixed media collage/drawing. His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. Among his works are the drawings which make up the brief chapbook "Bum Town", and a continuing series of drawings/collages with poetry, "The Wonder: Tales of the City". He's also done the artwork for several Steve Earle albums.

Tom Russell at Yard Dog Art

Famed singer-songwriter & painter Tom Russell will be at Yard Dog this Thursday to show off some of his new paintings before he plays the Cactus Cafe later that evening. We'll also be listening to his latest cd, "Blood & Candle Smoke."
Russell was born in Los Angeles in 1953 and now makes his home on a 2.68 ''badland farm'' on the border of El Paso-Juarez. He graduated from the University of California with a Master´s Degree in Criminology and taught school in Nigeria during the Biafran war, befor re-locating to Vancouver to begin his musical career singing Hank Williams´ songs in skid row bars. Raised on the cowboy music of the American West, he grew up to be a talented songwriter, and began issuing albums under his own name in the early '70s. However, Russell's material was also recorded by such luminaries as Johnny Cash, Guy Clark, Dave Alvin, and Doug Sahm, and k.d. lang, to name only a few. While much of Russell's work mined the country tradition, he was also known to flavor his work with Tex-Mex, folk, and the cowboy music of his youth.
